Old games made new
When I play games, I play the crap out of them for one or two weeks, getting most of the achievements, doing about 80% or so of the game or an equivalent of one play through on hard mode. Unless the game is spectacular, I predominately use this play style. It suits me, I see all of the game's story, and it gives me the chance to experience the rest if I want to, or take a break from it. Now, I usually never have the chance to come back from these games, but two recent sequel announcements have me coming back to two games, inFamous on PS3 and Dragon Age: Origins on my 360.
Find out why after the break.
inFamous, developed by Sucker Punch, was an awesome experience when it came out back in '09. After playing it for two hours today, I'd say it still holds up pretty well. An open world experience, kind of like Crackdown, with a Karma based system of powers and territory take over. It's fun, it has depth, and it has me hooked again. I started up a new game, with the goal of being the villain this time, but soon got sucked back into my previous save of the Aftermath of the game, in which I play with the hero powers. After a few minutes of refreshment, I was accustomed to the controls again, and was soon zapping people with my life-stealing lightning bolts. It was still fun, handled well, and was a blast to finish collecting a few collectibles that I had missed.
The reason I decided to knock the dust off of my Playstation and pop this game again was the gameplay trailer from E3 and the article in last month's GameInformer. inFamous 2 is slated for release in Q2 of 2011 and looks a lot like the first one. The art style and set of powers is different, but the story looks a little better (not that the first one was anything to laugh at), and the handling seemed a little more solid. I'm very excited about the new game, and while I wait I'm content playing the old one. I reccomend it to anyone who wants an open world, mission-based game. Graphically, it might show a little age (and there are a few spots were the audio cuts out), but it still looks great and you should definitely pick it up if you own a PS3. Another reason you should pick it up: It's made by Sucker Punch, the Sly Cooper guys. Win.
The second game I revisited today is Dragon Age: Origins. The reason I picked it up is rather obvious is you read my post from earlier today. Another sequel, another old game and, dang, it holds up. I only have a few more achievements left in it, namely the "Complete the game with 4 different endings" type of achievements. Those are going to be a pain to get, but hopefully the game will hold up for just a litlte bit longer. But I did realize why I stopped playing in the first place (read: the same freaking conversation trees every time).
Sequels usually make me go back to the original game. Some of them hold up great. Others, not so much. Have y'all ever had that experience?
